Blackjack Game Strategy
Like video poker, blackjack is a game of chance, but with the right strategy, it’s possible to achieve an RTP of 99.5 %. Strategy charts showing the best moves are readily available online. These are the key points:
- Stand on hard 17 or higher: Even if the dealer’s card is an ace or 10, it’s best to hold this hand.
- Double down on hard 11: Take advantage of this strong hand by doubling your bet.
- Split 8s and aces: A pair of 8s or aces are the most advantageous hands to split, regardless of the dealer’s card.
- Don’t split 10s: 20 is an excellent hand value, so always stand with a pair of 10s.
- Hit on ace-7 if the dealer shows a 9, 10, or ace: If the dealer’s up card is 9 or better, they are likely to form a stronger hand than 18 (ace-7).
- Only stand with 12 if the dealer shows 4, 5, or 6: If the dealer’s up card is 7 or higher, their hole card is likely to yield a hand stronger than 12.
- Stand with 13, 14, 15, or 16 if the dealer shows 2-6: The dealer’s hole card is unlikely to beat your hand.
Surrender on 16 against 9, 10, or ace: If surrender is available, use it against these dangerous dealer cards.
How to Play Blackjack
Game Rules
The aim of the game is to form a hand closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand.
Before the deal begins, players place their chips in the designated betting area. The deck is then shuffled automatically, and the dealer deals one card face up to each player in rotation clockwise, then deals one card face up to themselves.
If a player's first two cards are an ace and a 10 or face card, it’s a natural or "blackjack" and the dealer pays out 3:2. Similarly, dealer blackjack beats all players without blackjack. If a player and the dealer both have naturals, it’s a tie and the player gets their chips back.
The player to the dealer’s left acts first and has to decide whether to “hit” (ask for another card) or "stand" (not ask for another card). The player can hit until they are satisfied with their total. If their hand goes over 21, they go bust and lose their bet.
Play rotates clockwise in this way until finally it’s the dealer turns up their face-down card. The dealer has to hit on 16 or lower and stand on 17 or higher.
Bets and Payouts
Winning blackjack bets pay out 1:1, with blackjack awarding 3:2.
Other betting actions include:
- Insurance: If the dealer's up card is an ace, the dealer can offer Insurance. The dealer places a bet half the amount of their original wager on the insurance line. This bet pays out 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack.
- Double down: A player with a strong hand can double their bet and take one extra card.
- Split: A player can split a pair of cards into two hands. They place an additional bet the same size as their starting bet on the new hand and play both hands separately.
Blackjack Terminology
- Bust Card: A dealer up card likely to make their hand bust (usually 4, 5 or 6).
- Hard hand: A hand that has no ace.
- Hole card: The dealer’s face-down card.
- House edge: The house advantage on any given hand.
- Natural: When a player’s first two cards are a perfect 21.
- Soft 17: A hand containing an ace and a 6.
- Surrender: A player with a weak hand can quit the hand and get half their bet back.
